It is now 4 years ago, since the disputed elections of June 12th 2009. The whole world has been watching the violent crackdown on demonstrations, the arrests, rape and torture, forced confessions, intimidation and brutal violations of human rights against the Iranian people.
We urge the Iranian authorities:
- To repeal laws which criminalize the legitimate exercise of the rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly and bring them in line with international standards.
- To release, immediately and unconditionally, all prisoners of conscience: those imprisoned because of their political, religious or other conscientiously-held beliefs, their ethnic origin, their language, their national or social origin, their sexual orientation or other status and who have not used or advocated violence or hatred.
- To take immediate measures to end the practice of excessive use of force and violence by police, Basij paramilitaries or other government agents against those exercising their rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly.
- To end all forms of torture and other ill-treatment in detention, including prolonged solitary confinement, and to ensure that those responsible for ordering or committing human rights violations are held to account.
- To revise the procedures for trials held in Iranian courts, including Revolutionary Courts, to ensure that they comply with international standards for fair trial.
- To end all discrimination against women, religious and linguistic minorities.
- To introduce an immediate moratorium on executions and end the cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment of flogging, stoning and hanging.
